Mythological metaphors for AI ethics

Workshop overview

This workshop uses the strategic bluffing game Plato's Dilemma as a catalyst for exploring AI ethics and decision-making under uncertainty. Set in a "Cybergreek" universe where Greek mythology meets artificial intelligence, participants navigate complex moral dilemmas while discovering allies and managing shared resources. The focus is 70% on ethical reasoning and decision-making skills, and 30% on using mythological metaphors to understand contemporary AI challenges.

Mythological metaphors for AI ethics

Understanding ethical decision-making through Greek mythology and modern AI challenges

Gods vs. Titans vs. Humans

Competing stakeholder interests

Different organizational roles (executives, engineers, users) have fundamentally different goals and values when it comes to AI development, just like the three factions in the game.

Hidden identities and bluffing

Information asymmetry and trust

In real organizations, people have private motivations and incomplete information, requiring careful navigation of trust and verification in AI decision-making.

Shared resource management

Collective responsibility

AI development requires shared resources (data, compute, talent) and collective decisions about their use, with consequences affecting all stakeholders.

Worship and followers

User adoption and acceptance

AI systems need user acceptance and trust to succeed, similar to how gods need worshippers - requiring ethical behavior to maintain legitimacy.

Olympus vs. Styx outcomes

Long-term consequences of ethical choices

Ethical AI decisions have long-term consequences for organizations and society - leading either to sustainable success or eventual downfall.

Note about AI ethics and mythology

No prior knowledge of AI ethics or Greek mythology is required. The game uses mythological metaphors to make complex ethical concepts accessible and applicable to modern technology decisions.
